Club Information
The Great Lakes Portuguese Water Dog Club is a sanctioned Regional Club of the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America.
The idea for a regional Club in the Michigan and Ohio areas began in 2005. Through the efforts of Fred Brauning and Annette Lovse, the beginning stages of developing the GLPWDC began. An annual summer picnic became a tradition, and in those early days the group worked diligently toward being approved to host a licensed water trial. Those efforts were realized in August 2007, when the GLPWDC hosted a 2-day licensed Water Trial in Traverse City, Michigan. Since that time, the Club has grown by leaps and bounds through the dedication of the Officers, Board and Members. We currently have a membership of over 100, hosted two licensed water trials and two supported entries in 2009, and have a myraid of events planned for PWD fanciers throughout the Great Lakes region in 2010.
Currently, our Board is discussing applying for accreditation from the American Kennel Club through a process that details our Club history, past and upcoming events, and goals. By eventually becoming AKC accredited, we would then be allowed to hold independent events like agility trials, specialty shows, etc.
It takes a lot of time and effort on the part of the Members for a Club to be as successful as the GLPWDC has been in just a short amount of time! We look forward to continuing to grow as we educate the public about our wonderful breed and enjoy the camaraderie of friendship and competition with fellow PWD lovers.
